Fishing in Lake City

It’s been said that Lake City offers some of the best waters for fly fishing in the state of Colorado! We may be a little biased, but we agree! As with everything, we want you to be prepared while fishing here. Safety first, of course! You can see the list below.

You will need a fishing license first and foremost.  To see the rates for purchase, as a resident or non-resident, you can view that HERE.   To purchase a license online, you can do that HERE.  If you need to purchase a license when you get to Lake City, stop by Dans Fly Shop, located at 723 Gunnison Ave (near the post office!). Dan also has pretty much everything you will need to fish in Lake City. Plus, he is an expert fisherman who offers fly fishing classes once a week and he also knows of all of the best places to drop your line in the water!

  • Make sure you have a valid fishing license and identification on your person
  • Fish only on public property or private property with the property owner’s permission.
  • Wear proper attire. The weather in Lake City can change quickly, so be prepared for colder times.
  • Keep emergency items handy. You never know when you will need a lighter, your cell phone or a first aid kit!
  • Do not litter! Keep a bag with you or in your vehicle, to put your trash in. Help keep our rivers and public lands clean by picking up trash others may have left behind too! The wildlife thanks you!
  • Always let someone know where you will be fishing and when you plan to return.

For guided fly-fishing trips, contact Dans Fly Shop or Alpine Outfitters. You can pick up a detailed Fishing Guide at Dan’s Fly Shop, or the Lake City Visitor Center (800 Gunnison Ave).
