Hiking in Hinsdale County is probably one of the most popular activities in the area. Hinsdale County is home to 5 “Fourteeners” and that alone draws many people to the area. The Colorado Trail is also just down the road and there are many other beautiful trails in the area! With all of that said, hiking in the area can also be dangerous, so be prepared, do your research and pack for your trip accordingly. Basic tips include, keeping emergency items handy, letting someone know where you are going and when you will return, stay hydrated and pack additional warm clothing. We’d also like to add, carry Bear Spray and an airhorn. You never know when you might cross the path of an animal that you just don’t want to meet that day! Also, please do not feed the wildlife or leave food behind. Help keep our wildlife, “wild”.
If you are looking for a group to hike with, there are several people in the Lake City area who hike together regularly. You can join the Facebook Group, “Lake City CO Locals and Friends(click here)” and see who would like to join you, or let you join them.
The Lake City Visitor Center has a ton of information about hiking in the area. They have even created a map with some great detail! View the map here.
