Motorized Recreation

Many of the visitors to Lake City, are here to explore the Alpine Loop Back Country Byway. Mid-Summer, you can see many types of travel on the Loop. Jeeps, trucks, OHV’s and Mountain Bikes all share the roads and trails and it’s important to be aware of your fellow travelers. Share the road, be courteous and respectful. Most of us are on the trail because we love spending time in the beautiful outdoors and have great respect for the land. Nobody wants to be the jerk who breaks the rules, resulting in accidents, trail closures and other damaging consequences. So, make sure you are familiar with the local laws (see below) and that you are always respectful.

Here are more helpful tips for your trip!

  • Keep emergency items handy, such as cell phone, first aid kits, lighter, etc.
  • Wear proper attire and be prepared for changes in weather. Though it may be 70-80 degree’s in town, once you reach the top of Engineer Pass, you’ll wish you had brought along your favorite hoodie!
  • We recommend driving the Loop in a clockwise direction. Though, there is no required direction.
  • Vehicles traveling uphill have the right of way. The exception to this is if the approaching vehicle has no way to move aside, then just be courteous and make room.
  • Stay on marked trails, don’t drive over vegetation, drive over (not around) obstacles to avoid widening the trail, and respect all signage and barriers. Help protect our Tundra, this land is precious and the impact of your vehicle takes MANY years to repair.
  • Pack it in, pack it out. Better yet, carry a trash bag and pack out more than you pack in. If you notice trash, pick it up, please! The Lake City Visitor Center has a public dumpster available for visitors. You can drop small bags of trash from your travels there for free- but feel free to run inside and make a donation to help pay for the dumpster!
  • Right of way; Mountain Bikers and Hikers take priority. Please slow way down or even just stop if you can, to allow them to pass. Please keep dust at a minimum when sharing the road with our man-powered travelers.

Lake City isn’t a big town, as you know, but there are three fuel stations in town. Town Square, located on the corner of Hwy 149 and 3rd street, Lake City Auto, located on Hwy 149, just north of town near the Country Store and Sportsmans, located also on Hwy 149 heading south, just past the Henson Creek bridge.  Make sure, no matter the vehicle you are driving, that you have plenty of fuel to complete your trip.
